It’s been a few years since I have done any diving under the ice, but we have 8-12+” on most of the ponds, rivers, and parts of Lake Erie. Rod Althlaus (New Wave SCUBA Center) took a group to the Whitestar Quarry last weekend. He also asked a news reporter to tag along. The footage is in the video below.

Below are a couple pics from my ice certification class back in 2003. It was a cold class and definitely taught me to be prepared for the elements and ensure competence. The reality of one way in and one way out is amplified when there is a thick ice roof overhead.
