We mixed up training a little yesterday and went to the playground. A couple kids were more than happy to let us have the playground for about an hour. They intently watched throughout the drill as did some parents and other passerby’s. The crew was a bit skeptical at first, however, we can all say that this drill on the basics of hoseline orientation and moving in our gear was pretty good.
We started the drill by putting a firefighter with no visibility near a hoseline. The objective was to find the hose, orient yourself based on the first coupling found (Smooth-Bump-Bump to the pump) and then make your way to the pump.
A couple things to think about when planning this drill:
- Make sure the playground is solid enough for the adult weight.
- Don’t charge your hoseline to normal working pressure. No need to blow a line at the playground.
- Have spotters to prevent falls and injury.
