More Quick Sh!t & Fire Behavior Prop

Headed out the river yesterday into Lake Erie looked good.  However, the northern swells gave us early warning that the chop would build.  Not a great day of perch jerking, but still fun small boat ops.

Ryan Houghtlen has been working on putting together a few more Quick Sh!t sheets.  He is making it pretty easy to add them to the blog with little editing.  Be sure to check out the Quick Sh!t Page regularly to see the library grow.

What, Where & When

Fire Behavior Prop

While in Pierre, South Dakota earlier this year, Sean Kruger was explaining a fire behavior prop that helps show new recruits the different stages of fire.  Sean and his brothers at the Pierre Fire Department put together the video below showing how to build the prop and then some instruction on teaching with it.  Pretty innovative way to mix up classroom instruction.

New Quick Sh!t Page

Good numbers of Lake Erie Perch still jumping in the boat as the weather and water cools.

Brother Firefighter Ryan Houghtlen is the brains behind QUICK SH!T.  This premonition came while not being able to get through a full magazine article in one sitting.  The short and sweet, Quick Sh!t sheets can be printed and hung up in your favorite sitting or standing firehouse spots.  Our hope is to get you thinking and then for you to create a conversation about the topic around the workbench, kitchen table, or training ground.  If you have an idea for a Quick Sh!t sheet, connect with us on Facebook.

Check out one of the sheets below and then head over to the Quick Sh!t Page.  More to come.

Type 2 Roof Work

In Captain Greg Lash’s presentation on Type 2 roof ventilation, his crew showed a video they put together during training.  The techniques in the video solved a problem they faced on a flat roof.  They are looking into being able to share the video right here on FDT so we all can benefit from their research and skill development.   (more…)

Ohio Fire & EMS Expo Recap / Additional Resources

For the 3rd year in a row, the firefighters behind the Ohio Fire & EMS Expo put on a great show.  Each year it has grown bigger and better.  Somehow they have found a way to bring in high caliber instructors and keep the conference pass affordably priced and the expo hall free, thanks to Rescue Methods.  Be sure to “Like” Ohio Fire Expo on Facebook and watch for next years announcements.  It was great to meet some new brothers and meet-up with some old friends.

Glass Management Idea From Across The Pond

We spent a morning with Packexe Smash CEO Andrew Orchard at a scrap yard in Michigan to demo a glass management product.  Mr. Orchard is not a firefighter, but seems to get what we do. He put his money where his mouth is by flying in from the UK to show us what his product is all about and to make sure we understood the application.  He even left us a bunch of Smash to use at upcoming classes and new terminology unrelated to the fire service.  We’ll explain the later over a beer after training.   Smitty from Boron Extrication set us up with a bunch of cars to test the product and get some tool time in.

To be perfectly honest, I had not thought much about glass management other than yelling “glass” or covering a victim/rescuer with a blanket before smashing a window out.  After thinking about it for a little while…when glass breaks – dust and fragmented pieces fly everywhere including: down your gloves, pants, and into the area where you are working.  My first thoughts were that this is another time consuming task that we don’t have time or personnel for.  Using the product changed my definition of glass management.  Will we use Smash on every wreck – No.  Will Smash help us manage glass and protect rescuers and victims sometimes – Yes.  After a little practice, the application is not time consuming at all and the value seems worth a few seconds.

Swim course off of Cedar Point

Last weekend several of us competed in the Revolution 3 Cedar Point triathlon that tested varying degrees of endurance.  Does this type of endurance translate into endurance on the fireground?  You bet it does.  Leading up to the triathlon, we trained together and pushed each other to new limits.  Read previous posts leading up to the latest triathlon here and here.

Firefighter Brian Hackenburgs  journey to attempting the full Rev3 Cedar Point triathlon

Well, back in 2009 after sitting at home all day taking care of my oldest daughter Kayli, I started to notice how out of shape and overweight I had become. I weighed 218 pounds and could hardly run a 5K anymore. (more…)

Putting Technology In A Dummy

We took a tour of the Humanetics Innovative Solutions factory, which is the only company worldwide making crash test dummies for the auto industry.  These dummies contain an unbelievable amount of technology that provides data about how passengers are affected in various collisions.   This technology really helps explain how more people are surviving nasty crashes as compared to years past.
